Travel Guide: Mansar Lake Jammu Tourist Guide and Information

Jammu is the major tourist destination of Northern India. There are many other places of tourist interest near Jammu. One of them is Mansar Lake. Surrounded by the green forest of Pine and Mango, the Picturesque Mansar Lake, 60 Kilometers from Jammu is situated amidst low hills. About a mile in length and half a mile in width, the lake looks enchanting with lotus flower and swimming ducks.

According to a legend the twin lakes of Mansar and Surinsar date back to the time of Mahabharata and were caused by an arrow shot by Arjuna who in pursuit of the Lord of Nagas(Sheshnaag) went to the nether world causing a hole by shooting an arrow in the earth at the site of Mansar and after defeating the serpent king came out by shooting another arrow at Surinsar.

There is a shrine of Sheshnaag on the eastern bank of the Mansar Lake. There are also ancient temples of Shiva, Narsimha Avtar and Durga on the bank of the Mansar Lake.

A wild life sanctuary housing animals like spotted Deer, Neelgai etc. and birds like cranes and peacocks exists in the lake of Mansar. The lake has a metallic walkway all. Jammu Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation has a well maintained Tourist Bungalow and self contained huts with all modern amenities on the banks of the Mansar Lake.

So if you are planning to visit Jammu, don’t miss a chance to visit Mansar Lake. If you visit Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu, you can get a bus or taxi from Katra bus stand. Buses and Taxis also available, from Jammu city for Mansar Lake.
